Cricket Control Services in Northern Massachusetts

Crickets are a common sight in Massachusetts, often entering homes and yards, especially during warmer months.

While they might be harmless, their presence can be a nuisance. Here’s a look at the three most common types of crickets you might encounter and why they’re attracted to your home or yard.

Why Are They Attracted to Your Home or Yard?

Crickets are primarily attracted to environments that offer warmth, moisture, and food. During the summer and fall, they may seek shelter in your home or yard to escape predators or harsh weather.

By understanding what attracts these common crickets, you can take proactive steps to minimize their presence and maintain a cricket-free home and yard.

Crickets We Commonly See In Massachusetts

House crickets are light brown with three dark bands on their heads. They’re the most likely to end up inside your home, where they can survive for long periods. These crickets are attracted to warm, moist environments, making basements, kitchens, and bathrooms their preferred indoor habitats. They’re also drawn to light, which is why you might notice them around lamps and other light sources. Outdoors, they can be found in garden beds and under logs or stones, where they can stay hidden and moist.

Field crickets are larger, black or dark brown, and commonly found in Massachusetts yards. These crickets prefer outdoor environments but can occasionally wander indoors. They’re attracted to tall grasses, weeds, and garden debris, which provide ample hiding spots and food sources. They are also drawn to moist, shady areas, so thick vegetation or mulch beds around your home may be an inviting habitat. During the late summer and fall, field crickets may enter homes seeking warmth as temperatures drop.

Camel crickets, also known as cave crickets, have a distinctive humpbacked appearance and long legs. These crickets prefer dark, damp environments and are typically found in basements, crawl spaces, and sheds. Unlike house and field crickets, camel crickets do not chirp, but their appearance can be startling. They are attracted to places with high humidity and low light, making areas with poor ventilation and standing water especially appealing.
